A trailing drawdown is a moving loss limit. Instead of sitting still at your starting balance minus a fixed amount, the floor rises as your account grows — and it never comes back down. Make $1,000, and your “line in the sand” moves up $1,000 with you. Give those profits back, and the floor doesn’t retreat. That’s how traders get liquidated while their account is still above its starting balance.
In my years trading futures evaluations and funding accounts, I’ve seen more traders fail from misunderstanding the trailing drawdown than from bad trading. The rule sounds simple; the math in the heat of a trade is not. That’s exactly why we built this calculator.
Pick your firm and account, and we pre-fill the published drawdown rules: Apex Trader Funding (EOD and intraday trailing — intraday PA accounts lock at starting balance + $100), Topstep (end-of-day trailing that locks permanently at your starting balance), MyFundedFutures (end-of-day trailing), and FundingPips (static drawdown on standard plans; the Zero plan trails and locks at starting balance). Enter your high-water mark and current balance, and you instantly see your exact floor, your buffer in dollars, and a sane maximum risk per trade at three discipline levels.
The position size section then converts that risk into contracts for MES, ES, MNQ, NQ, gold and more — so the number you take into your next trade is one your account can actually survive.
1. Size for the buffer you have, not the account size printed on the label. A “$50,000” account with a $2,000 trailing drawdown is really a $2,000 account with leverage. Risk accordingly.
2. Respect unrealized highs on intraday-trailing accounts. On Apex intraday accounts, a trade that runs +$1,500 and comes back moves your floor up $1,500 — permanently. Take partials or manage the runner; the drawdown engine is watching your open profit.
3. Get to the lock. On Topstep and Apex PA accounts, the trailing stops once you’ve grown the account past the threshold. Your first mission in any funded account is not a payout — it’s reaching the point where the floor freezes. Trade small until then.
End-of-day (EOD) trailing recalculates your floor once per day from your closing balance — intraday spikes don’t move it. Intraday trailing moves the floor in real time with every new balance high, including unrealized profit on open trades. Intraday trailing is significantly harsher: the same winning trade can move your floor much further up if you let profits run and come back.
On some accounts, yes. Topstep’s Maximum Loss Limit locks permanently once it reaches your starting balance. Apex funded (PA) intraday accounts stop trailing at starting balance + $100. Other accounts, like Apex evaluations, trail for the entire life of the account. FundingPips Zero locks at starting balance once your equity is 5% above it. Check the lock note in the calculator for your account.
Yes — that’s the trap. If you grew a $50K Apex account to $53,000, your floor moved up to roughly $51,000. Drop back to $50,900 and you’re breached, even though you’re still “up” $900 on the account. This is the single most common way funded accounts die.
A rule of thumb from my own funded trading: keep at least 10–15 losing trades of room between you and the floor. If your buffer is $2,000, that’s $130–$200 risk per trade. It feels slow — it’s also how the traders who actually collect payouts trade. The calculator shows all three discipline levels so you can see the trade-off.
We verify presets against each firm’s published rules regularly (last check: August 2026), but prop firms change rules often. Every field in the calculator is editable, so always confirm your exact drawdown in your firm’s dashboard and adjust the numbers here to match.
