How to Set Up NinjaTrader for Futures and Prop Firm Trading

How to set up NinjaTrader - install, connect a prop firm, trade: Godlove University guide cover

I have set up NinjaTrader more times than I can count — on my own machines, on cloud servers, and on screen-shares with students who paid for a funded account and then got stuck at the very first screen. The frustrating part? The whole process is genuinely simple. It only feels hard because there are three quiet decision points where the software lets you choose wrong without telling you, and you only discover the mistake days later when your funded account refuses to appear.

So here is the walkthrough I wish someone had given me, written the way I actually do it — not the generic version. This is how I set up my own platform, step by step, with the traps flagged in bold before you fall into them.

How do you set up NinjaTrader? The short version

Five steps, in this order:

  1. Download and install. Sign up free at ninjatrader.com and install it. Windows runs it natively; on a Mac you will need a Windows environment or a cloud machine.
  2. Choose Multi-Provider at first launch — not Simulation. This is the step that silently costs people a week.
  3. Connect your prop firm account using the "NinjaTrader" connection type (not Continuum) and the Tradovate login your firm issued you.
  4. Strip your workspace down to two windows: the Control Center and one chart.
  5. Place orders with Chart Trader, with your stop loss and take profit set directly on the chart.

None of these steps needs technical skill, and if you already have your firm credentials in hand you can work through all five in a single sitting. If you only need one step, jump straight to it — each section below stands on its own.

What do you actually need before you install anything?

Three things, and gathering them first saves you from doing this twice.

First, an account to connect. For most readers that means a futures prop firm evaluation or funded account. If you have not bought one yet, understand how futures prop firm evaluations actually work before you spend money, and if you are comparing firms, my free prop firm finder will shortlist firms that match how you trade. Trading your own capital instead? Then know how much money you realistically need to start trading futures before the platform ever enters the picture.

Second, the credentials your firm gave you. When a futures prop firm sets you up, it issues you a login for your trading account — typically a Tradovate login. That login, not a NinjaTrader account, is what connects your funded account to the platform. Keep the exact username and password from your firm’s welcome email within reach; you will need them in step three.

Third, a Windows machine — or a way to borrow one. More on the Mac question below, because it has a clean answer.

One honest aside before we go further: if you have not actually committed to NinjaTrader yet and are still weighing it against MetaTrader 5, read my honest comparison of the two platforms for prop trading first, then come back. Everything from here on assumes the decision is made.

How do you get NinjaTrader on a PC — and what do you do on a Mac?

On a PC this is the easy part: sign up free at ninjatrader.com, download the installer, and run it. NinjaTrader is a native Windows application, so on Windows there is nothing else to think about.

On a Mac you have two workable routes, because there is no native Mac version:

  1. Run a Windows environment on your Mac. Virtualization software lets you run Windows inside macOS and install NinjaTrader there. It works, and plenty of traders do exactly this.
  2. Run it on a cloud Windows machine (a VPS). You rent a Windows server in the cloud, install NinjaTrader on it, and control it from your Mac — or from anything with a screen. This is what I personally do, and not only because I am sometimes on a Mac: a platform that lives in the cloud does not care if my laptop dies or my hotel Wi-Fi drops. I will come back to the cloud question near the end, because it matters for automation far beyond the Mac problem.

Either route gets you to the same place: a Windows environment with NinjaTrader installed, ready for first launch. And first launch is where the real setup begins.

Which option do you choose on first launch — and why is it not Simulation?

When you start NinjaTrader for the first time, it asks you a question that looks harmless: Simulation, Multi-Provider, or Live?

Always pick Multi-Provider.

Here is why this innocent-looking screen is the most expensive click in the whole setup. Simulation mode limits what you can do — and the thing it limits is precisely the thing most people installed the platform for. Multi-Provider is the mode that lets you connect prop firm accounts and your own brokerage, side by side. Pick Simulation because it sounds like the safe beginner choice, and days later you are staring at a platform that will not show your funded account, wondering what you broke. You broke nothing. You picked the wrong mode at a screen you saw once and forgot.

I have watched traders lose most of a week to this — reinstalling, emailing their firm’s support, blaming their credentials — when the actual fix was the launch mode. Pick Multi-Provider on day one and the platform simply never gets in your way.

The 50-second version, from my channel: why Multi-Provider is the only first-launch choice that makes sense.

How do you connect a prop firm account to NinjaTrader?

This is the section that answers the question my inbox asks most, and it contains the two traps that generate almost all of the confusion. The sequence I use for every firm:

  1. In the Control Center, go to Connection → Configure.
  2. Add a new connection and choose the type called "NinjaTrader" — not Continuum. This is trap number one. Continuum sits right there in the same list looking plausible, and a connection built on it will not bring in your firm account.
  3. Name the connection after your firm — FundedNext, Goat Funded Trader, whatever you hold — so that when you eventually have several accounts, you can tell them apart at a glance.
  4. Tick Connect on start up. Ten seconds now, and the platform logs itself in every time you open it.
  5. Enter the credentials your firm gave you — your Tradovate login. This is trap number two. People type in the NinjaTrader account they created when they downloaded the installer, get rejected, and conclude the connection is broken. The platform login and the account login are two different things: your firm issued the one that matters here.
  6. Click Apply. Your funded account appears, and once you are connected, your positions show on the account.

Here is the whole flow in one picture — including the two dead ends, crossed out where people usually take them:

The connection map. The two crossed branches — Simulation mode and Continuum — are where nearly every failed setup went wrong.

Repeat the same steps for each additional firm you get funded with — one named connection per firm. This is exactly why Multi-Provider mode mattered back at first launch.

Which windows do you actually need?

Open NinjaTrader for the first time and it is tempting to build a cockpit — six charts, market depth, news, watchlists everywhere. I run one of the busier trading operations you will find, with bots, funded accounts and my own capital in play, and my working platform is two windows: the Control Center and a chart.

The Control Center is the brain — it holds your connections, your accounts, your orders and positions. The chart is where the actual trading happens. Everything else is decoration until you have a specific reason for it, and decoration is not neutral: every extra panel is one more thing pulling your eyes while you are supposed to be executing a plan. I arrange the Control Center’s tabs so the account and order information I check constantly is one click away, and I let the chart take the rest of the screen.

Start minimal. You can always add a window later the day a real need appears. Nobody ever added discipline by adding panels.

My own platform layout: the two windows, the tabs, and where the bot-testing tools live.

How do you open a chart properly, and which contract should be on it?

Opening the chart is quick; the decision that deserves your attention is what goes on it.

Futures contracts expire, so unlike a forex pair, "the market" is always a specific contract for a specific month. Make sure the chart in front of you is showing the front month — the contract where the volume currently lives. Trading a stale or distant month is one of the classic beginner mistakes: the price moves differently, the fills are worse, and some firms have rules about it.

Then there is contract size. On my own charts you will usually find MES — the Micro E-mini S&P 500 — and if you are setting up your first futures platform, that is where I would point you too. The micro contract lets you learn execution with a tenth of the risk of the full-size ES. I have written a complete breakdown of MES versus ES and which contract beginners should trade — read it before you put real size on a chart, because the difference per point is not a detail, it is the whole risk equation.

And if you are arriving at futures from forex, the mechanics of contracts, months and tick values will feel foreign for about a week. My complete transition guide for forex traders moving to futures exists for exactly that week.

How do you set a stop loss and take profit on the chart?

This is the question that brings more people to my channel than any other single setup topic, and the answer is one feature: Chart Trader.

Chart Trader puts order entry directly onto the chart itself. Instead of typing prices into a ticket and hoping you got the digits right, you work visually:

  1. Enable Chart Trader on your chart, so the order controls appear alongside the price action.
  2. Place your entry, and set your stop loss and take profit straight on the chart — they appear as levels at real prices, exactly where your analysis says they belong.
  3. Adjust by dragging. If the trade needs its stop tightened or its target extended, you move the level on the chart and the order moves with it.

The reason I insist on this workflow — and the reason I teach it before anything else — is psychological as much as practical. When your stop is a visible line on the chart, placed before the trade goes live, you have made your risk decision while you were calm. The alternative — entering first and deciding your stop "in a second" — is how a two-hundred-dollar loss becomes a blown evaluation. Every trade I take, manually or through a bot, has its exit defined at entry. Chart Trader makes that the path of least resistance, which is exactly what good process should be.

Where do you test a bot or strategy?

Two tools inside the platform cover this, and knowing their names is most of the battle.

Strategy Analyzer is where testing lives — you take a strategy and run it against historical data to see how it would have behaved before you let it anywhere near a funded account. Whatever you think of a strategy, the Analyzer thinks in results.

The NinjaScript editor is where strategies themselves are written and modified — NinjaScript is the platform’s own programming language. You do not need to touch it to trade manually, but if automation is in your future, this is where that future lives. My own automated systems run inside the NinjaTrader ecosystem, and everything they do passes through these two tools before it ever touches a live market.

Should you run NinjaTrader on your own machine or in the cloud?

For your first week, your own machine is fine. But the moment your trading depends on the platform staying on — because a bot is running, or because you are in trades you cannot babysit — the honest answer changes.

A VPS is simply a Windows computer that runs in a data center instead of on your desk. You install NinjaTrader on it once, and it stays on: no dead laptop battery, no dropped home internet, no accidentally closing the platform mid-trade. I run all of my bots and automation strictly inside a VPS, and I have for years — my automation does not depend on my laptop being awake, and when I travel (which is often), my platform does not travel with me; it just keeps working.

It also quietly solves the Mac problem from earlier: a VPS is a Windows machine you reach from any device, so what you own on your desk stops mattering.

Do you need one on day one? No. Manual trader, platform open only when you are — skip it. But if automation is where you are heading, treat a VPS as part of the cost of doing it properly rather than an optional extra.

What do most people get wrong the first time?

Five traps account for nearly every "NinjaTrader is not working" message I receive. All five are above; here they are in one place:

  1. Choosing Simulation mode at first launch. It sounds like the beginner-safe option; it is actually the mode that limits what you can do, including connecting the funded account you bought the platform for. Choose Multi-Provider.
  2. Building the connection on Continuum. The connection type you want is the one called "NinjaTrader". Continuum is sitting in the same menu waiting to eat an afternoon of your life.
  3. Logging in with the wrong credentials. Your NinjaTrader website account and your firm-issued Tradovate login are different things. The firm’s credentials are the ones that connect your funded account.
  4. Not ticking "Connect on start up". Skip it and one day you will trade — or your bot will try to — on a platform that never actually logged in.
  5. Trading the wrong contract month. The chart looked fine; the contract on it was stale. Check that you are on the front month before the first order, every time.

If your setup fails in some way not on this list, breathe. It is nearly always the credentials or the connection type, checked in that order.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set take profit and stop loss on NinjaTrader?

Use Chart Trader. Enable it on your chart and you can place your entry with the stop loss and take profit set directly on the chart as visible price levels, then adjust them by dragging. Decide both levels before the trade goes live — risk decisions made in advance are the calm ones.

Can I use NinjaTrader on a Mac?

Not natively — NinjaTrader is a Windows application. Mac traders have two clean routes: run a Windows environment on the Mac itself, or run NinjaTrader on a cloud Windows machine (a VPS) and control it from the Mac. I use the VPS route myself, and it works from any device.

Is NinjaTrader free to download?

You can sign up free at ninjatrader.com and download the platform — that is how every setup in this guide starts. For anything beyond that, current terms and tiers, check ninjatrader.com directly rather than trusting an article’s snapshot of them.

What is Multi-Provider mode in NinjaTrader?

It is the first-launch mode that lets you connect prop firm accounts and your own brokerage side by side. The alternative, Simulation, limits what you can do — which is why the standing advice in this guide is to always pick Multi-Provider when the platform first asks.

Why is my prop firm account not showing up in NinjaTrader?

Check three things in order: the connection type is "NinjaTrader" (not Continuum), the credentials are the Tradovate login your firm issued (not your NinjaTrader website account), and the connection has actually connected — tick Connect on start up so it happens automatically. Those three explain nearly every case I have ever been sent.

Do I need a VPS to run NinjaTrader?

Not to start. A VPS earns its keep when your trading must survive your laptop — principally when bots or automation are running around the clock. I run all of my automation inside a VPS; a manual trader who closes the platform at the end of the session can happily skip it.

The bottom line

Setting up NinjaTrader is a one-hour job that people turn into a one-week job at three specific screens: the launch mode, the connection type, and the credentials box. Choose Multi-Provider, choose "NinjaTrader", use the login your firm issued — and the platform gets out of your way, which is all a platform is for.

Once the software is running, the real work starts: trading it well. That part is not a settings menu, it is a skill — and it is the part I actually teach. If you want the full path — futures, forex, risk, psychology, and the systems I use daily — my complete trading courses are where my students start. The platform takes an afternoon. The trader takes longer, and it is the better investment of the two — and if you want the case for that spelled out honestly, including what a course can and cannot do for you, read whether forex courses are actually worth the money.

Risk disclaimer: Trading futures and forex involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for every investor. Nothing in this article is financial advice; it is an educational walkthrough of software setup. Prop firm rules, platform features and account terms change — verify anything that matters with your firm and with the platform provider directly.
